Daihatsu Applause Break by EBS

Car of the Day #338: 1990 Daihatsu Applause Break by EBS – Beautiful stranger

Allow me, just this once, to write a number of words that is proportionate to how successful a car was.

EBS stands for Ernst Berg Systems, a now defunct Belgian tuner and modifier most known for its work on the Renault 5…and at least one targa Ferrari Testarossa.

Here, EBS chose to add function to the most criminally under-appreciated car of its generation, the Daihatsu Applause.

As you can see here, instead of a 4-door sedan-plus-hatchback body style, EBS added a rear wagon section, complete with a subtly integrated rail system.

Let me know if you can tell if EBS borrowed any donor parts (glass, hatch); my memory of 1990s Eurotrash is a bit foggy.

Counting the grey and white ones from the brochure and the white one above, this EBS conversion spotted in 2009 brings us up to at least four EBS Applauses. • Eelco on Flickr

Also, on New Subaru Outback Day, I needed a respite from overly clad SUVs. I mean crossovers. I mean fat wagons.

I could waste everyone’s time and regurgitate the Applause’s specifications, but the core point here is to appreciate that this little nugget even exists.

(And if you don’t already know about the Applause, it’s your cue to read up. Petrolblog.com / Wikipedia)
