Car of the Day #317: 2002 Mooncraft 6x4.com – Perfectly strange

You should have figured out by now that I have a special interest in aerodynamics, smart cars, obscure vehicles, and compellingly cute customization. Because y’all love 6-wheel vehicles, here’s one of my top 2: the Mooncraft 6x4.com.
We’ll get to its name in a minute.
May I say, as a former smart fortwo owner, initially I wasn’t sure what to think…besides it being incredible in every detail.
It’s a first generation smart fortwo with a chopped roof, stretched chassis, completely rebuilt suspension, and two extra wheels.
When your day job is building race cars, ‘Because road car’ is reason enough to follow your sketches to their completion.
The magnificent 6x4.com is the creation of a criminally under-the-radar designer and aerodynamicist named Takuya Yura, President of Mooncraft Ltd. Since 1975, Mooncraft has been involved in racing in Japan and abroad as the constructor MCS, but took a leap forward in 1986 when it built its own wind tunnel.
Now I say: if you don’t know Mooncraft, you know their work:
- Tamiya Big Wig R/C car
- Shoei X-1 helmet, designed for Ayrton Senna in 1991
- Gran Turismo darling, the 1995 Tommy Kaira ZZ sports car
- Mazda Junior Group C car (Mazda 717C, which I’ve written about here)
- 1992 Yamaha OX99-11 prototype supercar
- JGTC GT300 Championship-dominating ‘Shiden’ racing car
- Its support of the racing series K4GP, and the miniature version originally based on a Suzuki Alto, (if I’m not mistaken): the ‘Koshiden-R’
- Oh, and the 6-kart-wheel miniature Porsche 935 race car that everyone loves:
